Ty Megahee joins the Monmouth coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2009, after spending the last three years as an assistant at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. At Monmouth, Megahee will be in charge of the infielders in addition to working with the hitters.
As a volunteer assistant coach from 2005-07, Megahee worked mainly with catchers and hitters and was responsible for the academic progress of the team, as the squad posted GPAs of 3.07 (2007) and 3.12 (2008). During his three seasons with the Bears, Mercer finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference twice and played in three ASC Tournament Championships. During that span, 10 players were selected to All-Atlantic Sun Conference Teams and six players were drafted. Under the leadership of Megahee, catcher Josh Thompson was twice named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation’s top catcher. Also, from 2005-07, Mercer led the league in team fielding percentage twice, and registered victories over #1 Florida (2006), #1 Clemson (2006) and #2 Miami (twice in 2007).
A Mercer alumnus, Megahee lettered for the Bears in 2004 and 2005, playing for current Mercer skipper Craig Gibson. He was a two-year starter on the infield. During his career, Megahee helped the Bears jump into the upper echelon in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Following his senior season, Ty was awarded the Doyle E. Watson Leadership Award. He graduated in May 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in education, and earned a Master’s degree in education in 2008.
Prior to Mercer, Megahee played two years at Darton College under Glenn Eames. He was a two-year starter on the infield for the Cavaliers, helping them to third-place finishes in 2002 and 2003. Megahee ranks in the top five in school records for career hits, batting average and saves, and served as the team captain in 2003. He graduated from Darton in 2003 with an associate’s of science degree.
Megahee spent the summer of 2006 with the Florence RedWolves of the Coastal Plains League. He helped Florence to a 32-18 record, fourth-best in the league. Megahee served as the team’s hitting and infield coach. The 2006 RedWolves set team franchise records for batting average (.268), home runs (29) and on-base percentage (.350). Florence also finished with the fourth-best fielding percentage in the league (.964).
A native of Norman Park, Ga., Megahee graduated from Colquitt County High School in 2001, where he was a three-year starter for the Packers.
