BROOKLINE, Mass. – A goal in the final 10 minutes of play lifted Northeastern University to a 1-0 win over the Monmouth University men's soccer team in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Saturday night.Â
After trading opportunities throughout the night, the Huskies got a corner kick in the final 10 minutes and converted for the goal.
The Monmouth offense went to work right away, generating a corner kick in the first 41 seconds.Â
Northeastern fired off a pair of shots in the first 10 minutes as one was saved by
Herman Johnsen and one went off the post.
Victor Andersson had a shot in the 23rd minute that was saved and
Leo Zonta followed with a header that Northeastern keeper Brady Elmblad was able to get a hand on it.
The two teams traded shots down the stretch and went into the half, tied at 0-0.
Monmouth's best chance came in the 69th minute as Javi Losa put a ball in on a corner kick.
Raul Garcia put a shot towards the bottom left corner of the net, but Elmblad was able to just get a hand on it.
The two teams continued to battle and fired off shots on both ends of the field.Â
In the 83rd minute, Northeastern was awarded a corner kick. Kortay Koc put the ball in play to Will Schmidt at the top of the box. He fired a shot for the 1-0 lead.Â
Monmouth continued to press as
Sean Cadigan had a shot blocked late.
The Hawks fell by a 1-0 score to Northeastern.
Elmblad made four saves to earn the win in goal for Northeastern. Johnsen made one save in the loss for the Hawks.Â
Northeastern held a 13-10 edge in shots and took six of the match's 10 corner kicks.
Garcia, Andersson and
Jasen Bottini all took two shots in the match for the Hawks and each player put one on goal.Â
The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 22 when they host Rutgers Newark at 7 p.m.
