Monmouth Falls to Marist in Non-Conference Finale

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Monmouth softball closed out its non-conference schedule with an 11–3 loss to Marist in five innings in the opener, then dropped the second game, 6–3.

GAME ONE: Marist 11, Monmouth 3
Monmouth softball saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, falling 11–3 to the Marist Red Foxes in a five-inning game.

Monmouth came out strong, jumping to a 2–0 lead in the top of the first inning after the reigning CAA Co-Rookie of the Week Carah Sumpter delivered a two-run RBI single.

Marist responded in the bottom of the first inning with four runs on three home runs to take a 4-3 lead. Liv Smith pulled the Hawks within a run on a solo home run in the top of the second, but the Red Foxes added three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-3 lead.

Marist continued to add on, scoring once in the third inning to extend the lead to 8–3. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Red Foxes sealed the victory with three more runs in the fifth, ending the game early via the run rule.

GAME TWO: Marist 6, Monmouth 3
Marist took early control in game two, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings to build a 6–0 lead. Those six runs would be all the offense Marist needed.

Monmouth got on the board when a groundout allowed Ella Stevinson to score, cutting into the deficit. Monmouth pulled within three in the top of the fifth inning when Clare Picone launched a two-run home run.

Despite gaining some offensive momentum with no outs in the inning, the Hawks were unable to push across any additional runs, and the game settled into a defensive battle the rest of the way.
