Monmouth Drops Heartbreaker to St. Joe's, Falling 9-8 in 10 Innings

LOWER MERION, PA.  -Monmouth softball fell to Saint Joseph's, 9–8, in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field.

Saint Joseph's secured the win on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to walk it off.

Monmouth opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Ella Stevinson hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Dominique Lopez for the game's first run.

The Hawks extended their lead to 3–0 in the second inning. Tessa Thompson reached on a fielding error that allowed Stern to score, and Liv Smith added another sacrifice fly to drive in Clare Picone.

Saint Joseph's got on the board with a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 3–1.

Monmouth responded in the third inning, matching its largest lead of the game. Gianna Stern hit a two-run double to make it 4–1, and Clare Picone followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Mackenzie Bloss and pushing the lead to 5–1. Saint Joseph's added a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to make it 5–2.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Monmouth added another run in the fifth when Liv Smith singled to bring home Stern, extending the lead to 6–2.

Saint Joseph's answered with a five-run bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the game, 7–6.

Monmouth tied the game in the sixth inning as Stern delivered again, singling through the left side to score Gianna Scotti.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh, forcing extra innings. In the eighth, Bri Lawson gave Monmouth an 8–7 lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Smith, but Saint Joseph's responded with an RBI double to even the score.

After a scoreless ninth inning, Monmouth was unable to push across a run in the 10th. Saint Joseph's capitalized, using a sacrifice fly to bring home the winning run and seal the 9–8 victory/

NOTES AND NUMBERS 
  • Dominique Lopez extended her hit streak to 14 games. She tied her career-high with three hits
  • Gianna Stern (2 hits) also tallied a multi-hit game
  • Stern and Liv Smith finished with a team-high two hits apiece
  • Isabella Bonacci came in for relief, tying a game-high pf three strikeouts
  • Monmouth outhit St. Joe's 11-8. Monmouth left 12 runners on base while St. Joe's left seven runners on base
  • Jayla Cadena earned the start in the circle for her first start of the season, allowing two hits and two runs
  • Ashley Weisenstein made her second appearance of the season
