WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Behind a historic performance by junior guard
Gigi Gamble, Monmouth University Women's Basketball defeated Towson 83-77 on Thursday night at the OceanFirst Bank Center to close the regular season on a high note. The Hawks improved to 19-10 overall and 12-6 in CAA games, while also clinching back-to-back 10-win seasons at home.
Â
Gamble delivered one of the greatest individual performances in program history, pouring in a career-high 41 points while playing all 40 minutes. Her scoring total set an OceanFirst Bank Center building record by a Hawk and ranks as the second-highest single-game output by a Monmouth women's basketball player, trailing only Sandra Cook's 42-point game against Wagner in 1988. Gamble went 6-of-7 from three and led a Monmouth offense that shot 53.8% from deep and 50.9% overall from the floor.
Â
The Hawks also received strong contributions from
Alexis Davis, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting effort. Davis posted a team-best +10 plus/minus and recorded her first double-digit scoring outing since Jan. 2 at Elon.
Alexis Andrews added 14 points for her 15
th game in double figures this season.
Â
Monmouth found themselves trailing in each quarter, as the contest featured 13 lead changes entirely and nine ties. With the game tied at 65 with six minutes remaining, Gamble hit a pair of threes while Andrews added a banked-in deep ball from straightaway to suddenly push the Monmouth lead to eight. The Hawks were good enough from the free throw stripe late to secure the win.
