Monmouth Splits a Pair of Games against FDU

TEANECK, NJ. -Monmouth softball split a pair of games to in-state rival FDU Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader, falling 9-0 in the first game while picking up a 12-8 win over the Knights in the second game.

GAME ONE: FDU 9, MONMOUTH 0

FDU jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run home run and never looked back, shutting out the Hawks' offense.

The Knights extended their lead to 3–0 on an error, then blasted their second home run of the day—a three-run shot in the third inning—to make it 6–0.

They added three more runs in the fourth to secure the victory in five innings.

GAME TWO: MONMOUTH 12, FDU 8
Monmouth's bats came alive in the second game, as the Hawks exploded for 12 runs in a back-and-forth battle.

Tied at 7 heading into the seventh inning, Monmouth pulled away with a five-run surge to secure the win. Gianna Stern delivered a clutch two-run home run, and Ella Stevinson followed with a three-run shot to extend the lead.

FDU managed to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hawks' late offensive burst.

Monmouth had to come from behind in game two after FDU scored the game's first three runs. The Hawks responded in the top of the fourth inning, plating three runs to tie the game. Mackenzie Bloss scored Monmouth's first run on a passed ball, and Carah Sumpter doubled to center field to bring home Bri Lawson. Liv Smith then tied the game at 3 with a fielder's choice that scored Sumpter.

The Knights regained control in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice to take a 5–3 lead. However, Monmouth answered again in the top of the sixth with four runs. Smith singled to left field to score Sumpter, Dominique Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk, Stevinson added a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Smith, and Bloss capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 7–5 advantage.

FDU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, setting the stage for Monmouth's decisive seventh inning. Stern and Stevinson's home runs ultimately powered the Hawks to a comeback victory.
