HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Monmouth built a commanding first-half lead and withstood a furious late rally to earn its first-ever win over Hofstra, 13-12, in CAA men's lacrosse action Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The Hawks controlled the game early, using a fast start and faceoff dominance to build a quick lead. Monmouth scored the first three goals of the contest, including two from
Riley Chester, and never trailed. The Hawks then erupted for six goals in the second quarter, highlighted by three straight from
Ty Caffarelli in a span of 47 seconds, to build a 9-2 halftime advantage.
Caffarelli finished with four goals and an assist, moving within two goals of 100 for his career, which would set a new program record.
Connor Gorman added two goals and an assist, while
Ryan O'Rourke enjoyed a nice homecoming to Long Island by contributing a goal and two helpers.
Matt Porazzo,
Matt Dollive and
Caden Kesselring each scored their first goals of the season as Monmouth placed eight players in the scoring column.
Monmouth continued to control possession at the faceoff X, winning 19 draws behind
Landon Parker's 18 victories, keeping the Pride at an arm's length through the third. Hofstra mounted a comeback in the fourth, scoring seven goals in the period to cut into the deficit. The Pride trimmed the margin to 12-10 before O'Rourke scored off a feed from Caffarelli with 1:41 remaining to provide a critical cushion.
Dylan Cadigan delivered a standout performance in goal, recording a career-high 18 saves while facing 45 shots. Hofstra scored twice in the final minute to make it a one-goal game, but Monmouth's defense came up with a final stop in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
