Monmouth Drops CAA Opener to Drexel

Final Score
Drexel (5-3, 1-0 CAA) – 12
Monmouth (3-4, 0-1 CAA) – 8

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel used a strong second quarter to pull away as Monmouth fell 12-8 in CAA men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks struck first, but a five-goal Drexel run in the second quarter proved decisive. Ryan O'Rourke netted the game's opening goal just 57 seconds into the contest to give Monmouth the early advantage. The Dragons would score late in the first and early in the second to take a lead, but Ty Caffarelli cashed in on his team-leading 23rd goal of the season just a few minutes later to tie the game at two apiece.

Drexel then scored the final five goals of the period across a stretch of 8:49, and added the opening goal of the second half, as Monmouth saw its deficit fall to 8-2.
Bradley Wyckoff notched a pair of goals 3:20 apart in the third, good for his first career multi-goal outing. Nick Teets also found the back of the net in the third to pull Monmouth within three. It was a busy end to the third frame, as the two teams combined for three goals in the final 46 seconds, with Drexel holding a 10-6 lead entering the fourth.

The CAA foes each traded a pair of goals in the final quarter, but the Hawks could not generate enough clean looks down the stretch to force overtime.
