Monmouth Picks up Two Wins in Doubleheader

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - Monmouth softball picked up a pair of wins Sunday afternoon to close out the Make it Happen Games, downing Bethune-Cookman 7-1 while picking up a 4-3 in the second game against Colgate.

GAME 1: Monmouth 7, Bethune-Cookman 1
The Hawks rolled to a 7-1 win over Bethune-Cookman Sunday, using a big third inning to seize control and never look back.

Ella Stevinson lifted Monmouth  to an early advantage, helping spark an offense that stayed hot throughout the afternoon. After singling in the opening game of the day to send Olivia Smith home, Stevinson continued her strong performance by helping the Hawks grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Monmouth broke things open later in the frame. Mackenzie Bloss singled to left field, bringing two runners across the plate to extend the lead. Bri Lawson capped off the explosive inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Stevinson and giving the Hawks a commanding 4-0 edge.

Bethune-Cookman pushed across its only run of the game in the fourth inning on a Monmouth error, but the Hawks quickly responded to keep momentum on their side.

Lawson stayed productive at the plate, singling to left field to score Stevinson for the second time on Sunday. Dominique Lopez later delivered the knockout blow, launching a two-run home run to stretch the advantage to 7-1.

In the circle, Carah Sumpter earned her first win of the season, tossing 123 pitches over a complete-game effort. She struck out three batters and did not allow an earned run, keeping the Wildcats' offense in check as Monmouth cruised to the victory.

GAME 2:Monmouth 4, Colgate 3
Monmouth softball picked up right where they left off in Friday's contest, which was postponed due to inclement weather, controlling the pace from the first pitch and grinding out their third straight victory.

Monmouth struck first in the top of the third inning, plating four runs on five hits in the game. Mackenzie Bloss opened the scoring with a single to left-center field, putting the Hawks on the board and setting the tone offensively.

Colgate answered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to even the score at one. The Raiders later took their first lead of the game on a single down the right-field line, creating a tight battle heading into the later innings.

The Hawks responded in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Gianna Scotti drew a walk to bring a runner home and tie the game at two. Kaitlynn Place followed with another walk, forcing in a run to give Monmouth the lead. Olivia Smith then worked a walk of her own, adding an insurance run as the Hawks pushed ahead 4-2.

Colgate threatened in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit to one on a single to right field, but Monmouth's defense and pitching held firm when it mattered most.

Alissa Eimont delivered a dominant performance in the circle, striking out 14 batters in a complete-game effort to secure the victory and extend the Hawks' winning streak to three games
