Monmouth Drops Two Games on Day Two Of Terrier Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C.Monmouth softball closed out day two of the Terrier Invite with a pair of losses Saturday at Wofford Softball Stadium, falling 9–0 to Kent State and 10–7 to host Wofford.

GAME 1: Kent State 9, Monmouth 0

Kent State opened game one with two runs in the first inning, and the Hawks were unable to get the offense going in a 9–0, five-inning run-rule decision.

The Golden Flashes struck first on an RBI single up the middle before doubling the lead two pitches later to go up 2–0. Kent State added four more runs in the second inning to extend its advantage to 6–0. After a scoreless third inning, the Flashes tacked on three runs in the fourth to secure the run-rule victory.
 

GAME 2: Wofford 10, Monmouth 7

Wofford struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Hawks responded with a big third inning, scoring five runs to take control.

Tessa Thompson ignited the rally with a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 2–2. Momentum continued as Ella Stevinson doubled home two runs to give Monmouth its first lead of the game at 4–2. Kaitlynn Place followed with a single to center field to score another run and push the Hawks' advantage to 5–2.

After a scoreless bottom of the third, Wofford answered with a decisive eight-run fourth inning to regain control and take a 10–5 lead. Mackenzie Bloss later doubled to drive in two runs and pull Monmouth within three, but the Hawks' rally came up short as they fell 10–7.


 DOUBLEHEADERS NOTES AND NUMBERS 
 
  • Carah Sumpter earned her first collegiate start in the circle on Saturday against Kent State
  • Mackenzie Bloss kept her hitting streak alive, going 1-of-2 at the bat against Kent State and 2-of-4 against the Terriers
  • Olivia Lewis made her first appearance of the season against the Flash 
  • Mackenzie Bloss (2 RBI's), Ella Stevinson (2 RBI's) and Tessa Thompson (2 RBI's) led the way offensively vs. Wofford
  • Gianna Stern tallied a career-high of three hits vs. Wofford 
  • Alissa Eimont made her second start against Wofford, picking up a game-high two strikeouts
