WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University Director of Athletics Jen Sansevero is proud to announce the appointment of Lewis Young, MAEd, LAT, ATC, CES, as the new Director of Sports Medicine. With a distinguished career spanning NCAA Division I athletics, professional sports, and clinical leadership, Young brings a profound depth of experience, vision, and passion to the Hawks' athletic community.

"Lewis is a seasoned professional, and we are thrilled to welcome him to Monmouth. He is a compassionate leader, a lifelong learner, and someone who has dedicated his career to the care and development of student-athletes," said Sansevero. "His ability to build relationships, implement innovative care models, and lead will be transformative for our Sports Medicine team."

Young most recently served as Director of Clinical Operations at UNC Cary Orthopaedics & Spine Specialists, where he led multidisciplinary clinical teams, implemented new and innovative models utilizing athletic trainers as physician extenders, and championed a culture of collaboration and excellence. Young brings over a decade of hands-on athletic training and clinical operations experience.

Prior to his clinical leadership role, Young served in several prominent collegiate settings. At UNC Charlotte, he worked as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Football, developing return-to-play protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between compliance, nutrition, and sports performance teams. He also held sports medicine positions with Indiana University Football, the Duke Sports Science Institute, and Virginia Tech Athletics.

His professional roots also extend to the NFL, where he spent a season as a full-time athletic trainer with the Los Angeles Chargers. There, he crafted custom rehabilitation and return-to-play plans, collaborated on concussion care protocols, and gained exposure to surgical procedures alongside team physicians.

"I am honored to join Monmouth University and the greater Monmouth community," Young said. "I am also extremely grateful to Jen [Sansevero] for entrusting me with this opportunity to lead Monmouth's Sports Medicine Department. My vision for sports medicine goes beyond treatment — it's about building a proactive, holistic model that supports performance, recovery, and long-term health. In this new era of college athletics, we will tackle student athlete health and wellness head on to provide the best experience possible for our athletes."

A former NCAA tennis player and team captain at Roanoke College, Young holds a Master's in Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor's in Athletic Training from Roanoke College. He is a Corrective Exercise Specialist and maintains multiple national certifications in athletic training, CPR/AED, and anti-doping education.
