Monmouth Succumbs to No. 20 Stony Brook in CAA Road Tilt

Stony Brook, NY - Monmouth jumped out to a solid start, but was unable to keep pace with No. 20 Stony Brook in CAA women's lacrosse action on Friday evening.

Danielle McNeely and Caroline Brennan both scored early, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead with 6:33 remaining in the first quarter. Stony Brook responded by scoring the next three goals to take a 4-2 lead, but Monmouth's Maddie Flynn stopped the bleeding while pulling the Hawks within 4-3 after one period of play.

Stony Brook extended its lead to 5-3 when Julia Fusco found the back of the net 58 seconds into the second quarter. Flynn, however, answered again by trimming the deficit back down to one with 9:50 left in the first half.

Monmouth was unable to get any closer as Stony Brook clamped down and limited the Hawks to only two goals the rest of the way in the 16-6 triumph. Shea Berigan (third quarter) and Sophia Lymberis (fourth quarter) accounted for Monmouth's lone two second-half tallies.

The Hawks were heavily out-shot by the home team, which fired 30 attempts on goal. Goalie Katie Sullivan, who leads the NCAA in saves per game, turned aside 14 shots. Meanwhile, Monmouth managed only 12 shots on the Stony Brook net.
