Monmouth Falls to Hofstra by Slimmest of Margins in CAA Home Finale

West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth roared out to a 5-1 lead, but Hofstra clawed back and pulled out a dramatic one-goal victory in Saturday's CAA women's lacrosse game at Kessler Stadium.

Hosting the home finale, the Hawks outplayed the visiting Pride for much of the day. Monmouth controlled 22 of 32 draws and proceeded to out-shoot Hofstra by a 39-28 margin.

Senior Caroline Brennan started the party as different players accounted for each of the Hawks' first four goals. Grace Curtin, Maddie Flynn and Kate Carolonza all found the back of the net in the early going, building a 4-1 lead. Curtin's second goal extended Monmouth's edge to 5-1 with 4:36 remaining in the opening period. 

Five Hawks scored multiple goals in the game led by Flynn and Carolonza with three apiece. Brennan, Curtin and senior Danielle McNeely all finished the 15-14 setback with two goals each.

Hofstra battled back to take its first lead of the day when Julia Harris made the score 8-7 in favor of the visitors with 4:32 left in the second quarter.  The Pride took a one-goal edge into the break.

There were five ties and five lead changes during an action-packed second half. 

Nikki Mennelli scored the last goal of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth quarter to give Hofstra a 13-11 lead with 8:24 left on the clock.

Shea Berigan, Flynn and Brennan responded with three consecutive goals to give the Hawks a 14-13 advantage with 4:44 remaining in regulation, but Mennelli struck back. The CAA's leading goalscorer, who tickled the twine eight times on Saturday, scored twice over a 1:04 span to put the Pride back in front of the home team.

Monmouth had 2:43 to find an equalizer, but time eventually ran out on the Hawks.

Berigan, who finished with one goal and a game-high three assists, has tallied at least one point 14 straight appearances. She recorded at least one goal in 13 of 15 games, including 11 multi-goal performances.

SHORE THING
Monmouth's Caleigh Shore came away with a game-high 12 draw controls. She's averaging 5.14 draw controls per game against CAA opponents - fifth best on the circuit.

The Hawks close out the regular season at CAA rival Towson on April 26.
