Monmouth Stays Hot, Wins Non-Conference Finale over Sacred Heart

Fairfield, CT - Monmouth women's lacrosse won for the third time in its last four games by topping MAAC member Sacred Heart on the road Saturday.

Caroline Brennan found the back of the net 12 seconds after the opening draw and the Hawks never looked back in a 9-6 wire-to-wire victory at SHU's Campus Field.

Brennan was one of six Monmouth goal scorers in the non-conference contest. Kate Carolonza led the way with three goals and Shea Berigan continued her multi-goal streak.

Monmouth accounted for the final four goals of the first half to take a 7-3 lead into the break. Sacred Heart clawed back into the game by keeping the Hawks off the scoreboard during the entire third quarter.

After Ellie Edwards scored to pull Sacred Heart within 7-6 and 11:12 remaining on the clock, Berigan and Danielle McNeely fattened Monmouth's cushion while goalie Katie Sullivan closed the door.

Berigan rattled the cage with 7:12 left and McNeely took her turn 3:36 later. Caleigh Shore was credited with assists on both goals.

Meanwhile, Sullivan registered six fourth-quarter saves, including two in the final 2:00. She stopped 20 shots on goal en-route to her third win. The sophomore accounted for a stellar .769 save percentage.

Sullivan and the Hawks' defense limited the opposition to 6.3 goals per game over the three recent victories. Sacred Heart was unsuccessful on all five free-position opportunities on Saturday.

Berigan has scored 2+ goals in eight straight games. Carolonza followed up four consecutive two-goal performances by recording her first hat trick as a Hawk. Maddie Flynn and Sophia Lymberis also scored goals for Monmouth against Sacred Heart.
