Monmouth Drops CAA Opener to Elon on Senior Day at Kessler Stadium

West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth dropped its Coastal Athletic Association women's lacrosse opener to visiting Elon on Saturday afternoon at Kessler Stadium.

The Hawks saw seven different players find the back of the net in the 14-10 setback. Maddie Flynn, Shea Berigan and Sophia Lymberis accounted for two goals apiece.

Scoring off a pass from graduate student Kate Carolonza, Flynn, who was recognized along with six teammates during pregame Senior Day ceremonies, moved Monmouth to within 9-7 only 3:10 before the halftime horn. Elon answered with only 18 seconds remaining in the second quarter to take a three-goal lead into the break thanks to Ana Lee Vandiver, who recorded a game-high four goals on nine shots.

Berigan, who leads the team in scoring, finished with two goals and two assists for Monmouth. The junior has 2+ goals in eight consecutive contests. Lymberis has scored in four straight games. Flynn is responsible for seven goals over her last three appearances.Sara Curley, Caroline Brennan, Caleigh Shore and Carolonza rounded out the Hawks' list of goal scorers on Saturday afternoon.

Elon won 75 percent of draws, including 11 victories by MJ Santa Barbara, which led to a 38-22 disparity in shots between the visiting Phoenix and the host Hawks. Monmouth goalie Katie Sullivan continued her consistent play by making 17 saves.

Monmouth, again, made a late-game push, out-scoring its opponent by 3-1 margin over the final quarter but it was not enough.
