WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University Softball battled against UNCW but was held hitless in an 8-0 setback on Friday afternoon at MU Softball Park.

The Hawks had opportunities throughout the game, with Liv Smith drawing a walk and Giana Scotti reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Defensively, Monmouth turned in solid efforts, with Scotti turning a smooth double play on a lineout in the third and Kaitlynn Place throwing out three potential base stealers.

UNCW got on the board early with a run in the first before adding another in the second. A three-run third inning gave the Seahawks control, and they tacked on two more in the fourth to extend the lead. A run-scoring single in the fifth pushed the eighth run across for the Seahawks.

Jayla Cadena (6-8) started in the circle for Monmouth, allowing four earned runs over two innings while working around five hits and two walks. Olivia Lewis pitched the final three innings in relief, striking out one and limiting damage in the final frames.
