PHILADELPHIA – The Monmouth University men's lacrosse team put forth a strong effort, led by
Ty Caffarelli's five-goal performance, but fell 13-10 to Drexel in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field.
Monmouth started strong, taking a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, with
Connor Gorman and Caffarelli each finding the net. The teams traded goals early in the second, but it was Drexel's six-goal surge that gave the home side a 7-5 halftime lead.
Caffarelli and
Brendan Dundas fueled a third-quarter push, helping Monmouth cut the deficit to 10-8 entering the fourth. The Hawks battled to stay within striking distance, with Caffarelli scoring his fifth goal and Dundas adding his third late, but Drexel held on with key defensive stops down the stretch.
Goalkeeper
Tommy Heller made 11 saves, keeping Monmouth in the game despite Drexel's 6-2 second-quarter run. The Hawks outshot Drexel 41-34 and converted 3-of-3 extra-man opportunities in the game.
