West Long Branch, NJ – Madison Durr and
Abdi Bashir Jr. combined for 52 points as Monmouth University Men's Basketball swept the CAA weekend, scoring over 90 points for the second game in a row in a 92-83 win over the University of Delaware.
Â
MU opened the half with a six-point lead after a Durr left-wing three and maintained that advantage until the 7:02 mark when Delaware got even. The Blue Hens took a brief lead, but
Cornelius Robinson III's three-point play had MU back on top at 4:28. MU would never relinquish that advantage, with MU going 9-9 from the stripe in the final 3:20 and sealing the win with late blocks from
Andrew Ball and
Jaret Valencia.
Â
Monmouth led for the bulk of the first half, going up by six after a Bashir three and a
Dok Muordar layup. After Delaware took its first lead, it took MU six seconds to take it back on a Durr and one, sparking a 10-0 run to give Monmouth a nine-point edge. Delaware didn't lead again until the final seconds, but it was a Ball three 21 seconds later to send the Hawks to the break with a 44-42 lead.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"I'm so thankful that our guys fought hard enough to hold them off. They just beat us a few weeks ago down in Delaware. Our guys did enough to win, we kept fighting, I think my team is growing up." – Head Coach
King Rice
Â
"Hats off to the crowd, the student section once again, incredible. When you look around and see every section full, the environment on a Saturday afternoon, what's better than that? Cool environment for a college basketball game." – Rice on the crowd
Â
"We came back and we all knew what we could have done on the road and knew that two wins could get us to 5-5. They're giving me opportunities downhill, fouling me and I'm making free throws, stepping to the line and making free throws is my job. Everybody's doing their job and you finally see it coming together these last two games." – Guard
Madison Durr
