WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Five standout student-athletes from Monmouth University's football program have been recognized by College Sports Communicators (CSC) as members of the prestigious Football Academic All-District Team, announced Tuesday
Tight ends
Jack Neri and
Shane Garrett, offensive lineman
David Dutra, defensive lineman
Brendan Bigos and punter
Luke Schabel were each named to the list which celebrates key on-field contributors who own cumulative grade-point averages above a 3.5.
Neri, a repeat honoree, played a significant role for Monmouth's offense and totaled 32 receptions for 329 yards and five touchdowns, tying for third on the team in touchdowns. He had a season-best eight receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown in the win at Rhode Island. Neri was a reliable target throughout the season, including a career-long 40-yard touchdown reception on a trick play in the win at No. 20/18 Stony Brook.
Garrett played in 11 games as a sophomore on offense and special teams, while Dutra played in every game during his senior season and made six starts for Monmouth's high-powered offense. Bigos also made an impact by playing every game on defense and special teams with 10 tackles on the year. On special teams, Schabel averaged 44.9 yards per punt as a sophomore, including a career-long 72-yard boot against Bryant.
Neri was one of the student-athletes selected as a CSC Academic All-America® finalist, and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced January 28, 2025.
