West Long Branch, NJ – Madison Durr set an OceanFirst Bank Center record with 40 points, and
Abdi Bashir Jr. had 32 as Monmouth University Men's Basketball won a thriller over Drexel University Thursday night, 104-97 in double overtime.
Â
Durr scored all but one point for MU in the second extra session, putting the Hawks up at 2:20 with a take to the rim before netting four clutch free throws down the stretch. MU ended the game on a 7-0 run, holding Drexel off the board for the final 2:36 and allowing just one field goal in the second OT.
Â
Bashir has MU leading early in the first overtime with a three, and Durr put the Hawks up at 2:39. In a tie game,
Jack Collins got a friendly roll to put the Hawks on top, and after Drexel tied it from the line, Bashir had the final shot but it didn't fall, sending it to a second OT tied at 91.
Â
Monmouth led by as many as 13 early in the second half, and never trailed in the half at any point. A tight game saw Drexel keep it close throughout, with the lead not growing past five the entire last five minutes. Despite going 6-6 from the line in the final 1:05, Drexel continued to answer, and Shane Blakeney's three with 0.9 seconds to go sent it to overtime tied at 80.
Â
Drexel led early, but MU rolled off a 17-3 run with four triples from Bashir in 2:45 to lead by 10. Bashir got hot again later in the half, hitting two in 46 seconds to push the advantage to 18. Drexel chipped away, ultimately sending it to half with the Hawks up 44-33. Â

NOTES AND QUOTES
"That was an awesome, awesome game. You have to give Drexel and Zach Spiker a lot of credit, but you also have to look at our guys. There were so many times we could have stopped playing in this game because things didn't go our way, but our guys just kept fighting." – Head Coach
King Rice
"Shout out to our student section. That was so awesome. These kids showed up and showed out. That was so cool that they were here and we probably would not have stayed strong enough to win that game without our students." – Rice on the student section
Â
"I'm a very downhill player, I think that's when I'm really good at making plays. We all have roles, today it called for me scoring, other days it calls for me making passes out. Coach Rice instills confidence in me, being a point guard I definitely get coached differently here and this is the best place I've ever been." – Guard
