RICHMOND, Va. – Monmouth University football sophomores
Michael Calton Jr. and
Deuce Lee have been selected as the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week and CAA Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday.
The awards come as a result of Monmouth's milestone victory on Saturday night against FIU. The 45-42 triumph came down to the final minutes where both Calton Jr. and Lee played a pivotal role in Monmouth's first win over a FBS program.
Calton Jr. nailed the game-winning 43-yard field goal with 1:52 remaining to give the Hawks the lead for good. The Manalapan, N.J. native, who was also 6-for-6 on extra points against FIU, hasn't missed a kick all season, going 2-for-2 on field goals of 40+ yards and 19-for-19 on extra points.
On the ensuing FIU possession, Lee forced a fumble on the 1-yard line and recovered it with 32 seconds left, securing Monmouth's three-point win. With the Hawks clinging to a field goal lead and FIU driving, Lee stripped Eric Rivers just before he crossed the goal line to complete the biggest upset win in program history. Lee finished with a team-high eight tackles, including five solo stops.
Monmouth returns home to Kessler Stadium for the first of four straight home games on Saturday. The Hawks host Fordham at 1 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season and the game will be broadcast live on SNY, NBC Sports Philadelphia+ and FloSports.
