Hawks Fall at Loyola on Second Half PK

BALTIMORE, Md. – Loyola University (Md.) scored a penalty kick in the second half to secure a 1-0 win over the Monmouth University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon. 
 
The Hawks applied the pressure early as the visitors fired off three shots in the first 12 minutes of the contest. 
 
Monmouth continued to pressure but a couple of nice saves from Brigid Mulholland and a shot that hit the crossbar kept the contest at 0-0.
 
The two teams went into the break tied at 0-0 despite the Hawks outshooting the Greyhounds 8-0.
 
Monmouth had three shot chances in the first 11 minutes of the second half but was unable to convert. 
 
Cassie Coster had a pair of saves as the match approached the 60-minute mark to keep Loyola off the board. 
 
A foul by the Hawks in the box in the 64th minute gave Loyola a chance on a penalty kick. Baylee DeSmit converted the opportunity to give the home team a 1-0 edge. 
 
Monmouth fired off eight more chances over the closing stretch but was unable to convert the equalizer as Loyola secured the 1-0 win.

NOTES AND QUOTES
"Tough way to end our competitive non-conference schedule. We had plenty of opportunities to win the game today but sometimes it just is not meant to be. We are looking forward to finally playing at home and starting CAA play next week." - Monmouth finished non-conference action with a 4-1-3 mark.  
- Monmouth was facing Loyola for the first time since 2016. The Hawks lead the all-time series 3-2 despite wins by the Greyhounds in each of the last two meetings. 
- Liza Suydam led the Hawks with five shots in the contest, including two on goal.
- Cassie Coster has now made at least three saves in five contests this season.

- Monmouth held a 20-8 edge in shots in the contest. The Hawks took seven shots on goal to Loyola's four.
- Monmouth took seven of the nine corner kicks in the match. 
- Brigid Mulholland made seven saves to earn the win in goal for Loyola  
- Cassie Coster finished with three saves in the loss for the Hawks.
