Monmouth Scores 30 in Season Finale at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Monmouth University baseball team closed out the 2024 campaign with a 30-3 win over Hofstra University in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Saturday. 
 
The Hawks wasted little time in getting on the board in this one. Monmouth sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first and scored five runs. Trey Porter had a two-run single and Brendan Buecker added an RBI base knock.
 
Chris Andrews launched a three-run home run to left in the second and pushed the Hawks' advantage to 8-0. 
 
Hofstra put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second and made it an 8-2 game. 
 
Back-to-back home runs from Phil Stahl and Joey Ventresca in the fourth gave the Hawks an 11-2 lead. 
 
The Hawks scored seven runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth and led 19-2.
 
Hofstra put a run on the board in the bottom of the seventh. 
 
Monmouth closed out the scoring with 11 runs in the top of the ninth. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from Matt Scrivanic. 
 
NOTES
- The Hawks hold a 9-8 edge in the all-time series with Hofstra.
- Monmouth finished the season with 11 CAA wins, that's a five-game improvement in league play from a year ago.  
- The 30 runs scored by the Hawks are the most runs in a game since Monmouth scored 35 against Temple in 2006.  
- Phil Stahl finished the game with three hits and ended his career on a 16-game hit streak.
- Austin Denlinger scored six runs in the game which is believed to be tied for the most runs scored in a game by a Division I player this season. 
- Casey Caufield finished the year having hit safely in eight straight games. 
- James Harmstead scored a career-high four runs in the contest. 

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Monmouth finished with a 19-7 advantage in hits in the game. 
- The Hawks had a season-high 11 extra base hits in the game (seven doubles, four home runs).
- Monmouth's three through six hitters (James Harmstead, Austin Denlinger, Phil Stahl and Chris Andrews) combined for 16 runs scored and 13 RBIs in the contest. 
- Kevin Opanel earned the win in his final start of the year for the Hawks. He tossed six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out three. 
- Penn Sealey took the loss for Hofstra as he started and went 0.2 innings and allowed five runs on two hits.
