WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Junior right-hander Billie Kerwood struck out 12 batters as the Monmouth University Softball Team defeated the College of Charleston Cougars at MU Softball Park on Friday afternoon, 4-1.

Kerwood narrowly misses her single-game punchout total of 13 (vs. Akron, 2/25/24) as she did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. She struck out multiple Cougars in five out of her seven innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and one unearned run.

Mackenzie Bloss tallied her team-leading 23rd and 24th RBIs during the contest. Bloss hit an infield single to bring home Dani Dabroski in the first for the game's first run, and later hit a sac fly to score Dabroski again in the second. The scored their other two runs on a back-to-back free passes with the bases loaded in the first. Tessa Thompson was hit by a pinch and Abby Warner drew a four-pitch walk.

Monmouth gets back in the win column and improves to 8-13 in the CAA and 16-30 overall.

QUOTE
"What a great way to start a series. I thought Billie was outstanding in the circle. She did a great job and had fantastic command all day long. There were some really great plays defensively behind her, particularly up the middle.

Getting on the board early was key to putting the pressure on them, and with her that locked in, it really went a long way. I'm really proud of how we came out and ready to play. We played loose. We played together. Looking forward to getting back on the dirt tomorrow." – Head Coach Shannon Salsburg
