Late Runs Lift Elon Over Monmouth

ELON, N.C. – Elon University scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and held off the Monmouth University baseball team in the ninth for a 5-3 win in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday night. 
 
Elon grabbed the early advantage in the game with a run in the bottom of the second and another one in the bottom of the third. 
 
Monmouth made it a 2-1 game in the top of the fifth. Chris Andrews reached on a double and on a pickoff attempt at first, came around to score. 
 
Elon pushed its lead back to two, 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh. 
 
The Hawks got the offense going in the top of the eight. Eric Sabato led off with a double and came around to score on Harry Padden's one-out single. Padden looked to be stranded at second but on a strikeout, Elon had a wild pitch and an error that allowed Padden to score from second. That tied the game at 3-3.
 
Will Vergantino's two-out two run double in the bottom of the eighth gave Elon a 5-3 advantage. 
 
Monmouth loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Elon was able to get a pop up for the final out to secure the win.

NOTES
- Elon moves to 4-0 all-time against Monmouth.  
- Eric Sabato had a pair of hits and recorded his team-leading 13th multi-hit game of the season.
- Chris Andrews' double stretched his on base streak to a career-best nine straight games.
- James Harmstead drew his 16th walk of the season and 74th of his career. That extended his on base streak to five straight games. 
- Harry Padden stole his seventh base of the season. 
- Dante Ciaramella's strikeout gave him 16 for the season and 97 for his career.  

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Elon out hit the Hawks, 10-4 in the contest. 
- Ben Sieracki earned the win in relief for Elon. He went the final 1.1 innings and gave up one hit, while striking out three with three walks.
- Dante Ciaramella took the loss for the Hawks after tossing an 1.1 and giving up two runs on two hits.
