NORFOLK, Va.  – The Monmouth University women's rowing team completed a strong week of training with a head-to-head competition against Old Dominion on Saturday on the Lafayette River, the Monarchs' home river.
Following a week of training and rowable water each day, Monmouth closed the week with a Friday scrimmage against Saint Joseph's before a true matchup with ODU to close the trip.Â
The Hawks had their first and second varsity eight boats compete against ODU with positive results. The first varsity eight finished with a time of 7:20.99, 12 seconds behind ODU, while the second varsity eight crossed the line in 7:30.26 to win that race by a narrow margin.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"The team had an outstanding week of training at ODU. We are so thankful for the hospitality that the ODU staff and athletes greeted us with, allowing us to share their beautiful facility and great water. With only one day of water time prior to the trip, we were able to log over 100 extremely valuable miles of training and saw tremendous progress. Â
The Friday scrimmage and Saturday race allowed us to get out side by side with two very strong programs. The results tell us that we have made solid gains since we raced both of these teams this fall. For three quarters of our team this was the first collegiate 2,000-meter race of their young careers. As a coaching staff we are very proud of the way they performed and are looking forward to lining up against LIU, George Mason and Iona in two weeks."
