Comeback Bid Falls Short for Monmouth in CAA Opener at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Monmouth University women's lacrosse team scored six of the first seven goals after halftime, but Elon responded to hold off the Hawks' comeback bid in a 16-13 win in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field.

The home team built leads of 5-1 and 10-4 heading into intermission before Monmouth got its offense going. The Hawks pulled within a goal on Mya Brock's second of the day to close the third-quarter scoring and cap a 6-1 spurt. Elon regained a comfortable advantage with three goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Caroline Brennan finished the day with a five-goal performance to lead Monmouth's offensive output.

Monmouth dropped to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in CAA play.
Elon leveled the all-time series with Monmouth at 1-1. Each team owns a win on their home field.

Numbers Crunch
Caroline Brennan scored five goals to increase her season total to 26. Brennan collected her fifth hat trick of the season.
Danielle McNeely had a pair of goals and three assists for a five-point day. It was her fifth multi-point game of the year. She also led the team with three caused turnovers.
Mya Brock scored twice to give her 15 goals on the season and added an assist.
Sophia Ianno, Maddie Flynn and Sophia Lymberis each added a goal in the game. Lymberis had an assist as well.
Ianno led the Hawks with five draw controls and five ground balls.
Katie Sullivan tallied 12 saves, her fifth double-digit save performance of the season.
Shots favored Elon, 39-26, including 28-20 on goal.
The Phoenix held a 24-9 edge in draw controls.
