WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 7 Drexel University hit the game-winning shot with 34 seconds to play and defeated the No. 2 Monmouth University women's basketball team, 58-56 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday night.Â

With the game tied at 7-7 in the first quarter, Drexel closed the period on a 12-3 run and took a 19-10 lead. Amaris Baker had seven points in that stretch for the Dragons.Â

The two sides went back-and-forth to start the second quarter as the Dragons led 24-14 with 7:05 showing on the clock. Monmouth used a 9-4 run to cut the deficit to five, 28-23 with 2:37 left until the break.
Ariana Vanderhoop had four points in that stretch. Baker scored the final four points of the period as Drexel took a 32-23 lead at the break.Â

Drexel opened the third quarter on a 6-2 run and took a 38-25 lead with 7:39 to go in the period. Monmouth scored the next seven points in the run and cut the Drexel lead to six, 38-32 with 5:15 left in the period. The Dragons scored six of the next eight and pushed their lead back to 10, 44-34 with 2:48 showing on the clock. Monmouth scored five of the last seven in the period, but Drexel led 46-39 at the end of three.Â

A pair of three-pointers from
Rosalie Mercille and Vanderhoop helped Monmouth cut the Drexel lead to four, 49-45 early in the fourth. The two teams traded points as a Brooke Mullin three-point play at 5:13 pushed the Drexel lead back to seven, 54-47. Monmouth tallied seven of the next nine points and cut the Drexel advantage to two, 56-54 with 2:59 to go.Â

Taisha Exanor fast break bucket at the 56 second mark and tied the game at 56-56.Â

Grace O'Neill hit a pull up jump shot with 34 seconds left that gave Drexel the 58-56 edge. The Hawks got off a pair of shots in the final 20 seconds but couldn't get either to fall and Drexel claimed the win.Â
