MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Quinnipiac and Western Michigan each handed the Monmouth University Softball Team a loss during the first day of the 2024 Spring Games on Friday.
The Hawks built a three-run lead halfway through the contest behind an RBI double from
Savannah Simons (1-for-4) in the third and RBI singles from
Ana Rodriguez (2-for-3) and
Lexi Castaneda (2-for-3) in the fourth.
The Bobcats responded with a run in the fourth on a steal of home and then took the lead with a three-run fifth. The Hawks would put the tying run on in the top of the seventh via a leadoff walk, but Quinnipiac got the final three outs before pinch-runner
Kaitlynn Place made it into scoring position.
Billie Kerwood threw 4.1 innings with two strikeouts before getting lifted in the fifth.
In the second game of the day, Western Michigan struck for three runs in both the second and third innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Five Hawks registered a hit, but the Broncos used a solo homer in the top of the seventh to seal the 7-0 win.
Olivia Lewis made the start in the circle with
Kait Mulcahey taking over in the third inning.
Ana Rodriguez finished off the game pitching 3.0 innings and striking out four.
