Double Overtime, UNCW advances 5-4 on PKs

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 6 UNCW advanced past the No. 3 Monmouth University men's soccer team on penalty kicks after the two sides battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament.

Both teams had their chances in the first half but two saves from Eryk Dymora and one from Trey Smiley kept things scoreless at the break.

The Hawks broke through early in the second half. Erik Reis took a free kick for the Hawks that bounced once and went into the top corner of the net on the right side for a 1-0 advantage at 50:42.

Monmouth continued to pressure as Patrick Osiecki had a shot go just high and Jakob Friedman put one off the crossbar.

UNCW was able to get the equalizer at 80:12 as the Seahawks saved a ball from going out and Christian Acevedo was able to punch it home.

Dymora and Smiley each recorded a save apiece in the first overtime period and kept the game knotted at 1-1.

Dymora saved UNCW's only shot of the second overtime and Jasen Bottini put a shot wide for the Hawks. That sent the game to penalty kicks.

Reis, Olle Brorsson, Dymora and Victor Andersson were all able to connect on their penalty kicks for Monmouth. However, UNCW finished the seven rounds of penalty kicks with a 5-4 advantage to advance.
