MU WBB FALLS TO TENNESSEE TECH IN FIRST FOUR GAME

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – Tennessee Tech hit 12 three-pointers en route to a 79-69 win over Monmouth University in the NCAA First Four game at Assembly Hall on the campus of Indiana University on Thursday night. The Hawks, who were making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 40 years, finished the season with a record of 18-16
 
Ariana Vanderhoop led the Hawks with 17 points and three rebounds while Lucy Thomas came off the bench to add 16 points and a team-high six rebounds. Bri Tinsley chipped in 11 points and three assists for Monmouth. Tennessee Tech was led by Maaliya Owens and Jada Guinn who had 18 points each. 
 
The first quarter proved to be a back-and-forth battle as neither team took a lead of more than five points. A late jumper from Vanderhoop had the two teams tied at 17-17. The Golden Eagles had the hot shooting hand in the second quarter. Tennessee Tech shot 8-of-11 from the field and five of those eight were from three-point range. The Golden Eagles out scored the Hawks 23-16 in the period and took a 40-33 lead at the break. 
 
The two teams traded baskets to start the third period. A three-point play from Tinsley at 5:08 made it a 43-39 game. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 12 before a late bucket from Lovin Marsicano made it a 54-44 game at the end of three. The Hawks cut the Tennessee Tech lead to six, 62-56 with 4:31 to go in the game but that was as close as Monmouth would get in the final 10 minutes. The Golden Eagles claimed the 79-69 win.

- Monmouth was making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 1982-83 season. 
- The Hawks had a five-game win streak snapped in the loss.
- MU won the rebounding battle, 30-29. The Hawks won the battle on the boards in their final 12 games of the season. 
- Both teams shot the ball extremely well from the foul line. Monmouth was 15-for-17 while Tennessee Tech shot 17-of-19. 
- Monmouth held a 36-14 advantage when it came to points in the paint. 
- There were 12 lead changes and four ties in the contest. 
- Monmouth had a 12-6 advantage in second chance points.

 NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Ariana Vanderhoop finished with 17 points, it was her second straight game in double figures and 17th of the season. 
- Lucy Thomas had 16 points in her final game as a Hawk. It was her 12th game of the season in double figures. 
- Bri Tinsley had 11 points to reach double figures for the 20th time this season. 
- The game marked the final appearance for Thomas, Tinsley, Jen Louro and Lovin Marsicano in a Hawk uniform. 

NEXT UP
Monmouth finished its first season in the CAA with an 18-16 overall mark and a 9-9 mark in conference play. The Hawks' 18 victories are the most by a Monmouth squad since the 2011-12 season.
