MONMOUTH FALLS TO TOWSON IN CAA CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

TOWSON, MD – The Monmouth University women's soccer team took Towson to the final seconds, but ultimately the top-seeded Tigers held off the Hawks by a 2-1 final score in the 2023 CAA Women's Soccer Championship match.
 
Monmouth was able to jump out to an early lead when Chloe Ferreira headed home a bouncing cross in the penalty area that was set up by Julia Evernham's pass. The 16th minute goal was Ferreira's second of the year, but Towson quickly answered on the other end. Eight minutes later, Nia Christopher's shot just crossed the goal line to level the score at 1-1.

The stalemate held until Phoebe Canoles put Towson ahead with 10 minutes remaining with a one-touch goal inside the six-yard box. Monmouth had an opportunity to tie the game with six seconds remaining after drawing a penalty kick, but Liza Suydam's kick was saved as Riley Melendez preserved the victory for Towson.

Suydam, Marisa Tava and Lauren Bruno were Monmouth's All-Tournament Team selections.

"Tough one to swallow today as we had chances to put them away. Towson is a good team with special players. Although we wish it were us, no doubt, Towson will represent the CAA proudly in the NCAA tournament. Despite falling short of our goal of winning this championship, there is so much to be proud of this season. Our entire 25 player roster gave their all, not only today, but the entire season and that's all we can ask for."

- Chloe Ferreira scored her second goal of the season and the sixth of her career.
- Julia Evernham and Allie Jones had assists on Ferreira's goal. It was the second assist of the year for both Evernham and Jones.
- Cassie Coster made five saves in goal for Monmouth.
- Monmouth outshot Towson 14-12.
- Towson had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UP NEXT
The Hawks end their 2023 season with an 11-6-2 overall record, their 18th consecutive winning season. Towson will represent the CAA in the NCAA Tournament.
