Double Overtime Match
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Ben Zakowski scored late in the second half to send the game to overtime, but No. 1 Hofstra University scored in the first overtime period to secure a 2-1 win over the No. 2 Monmouth University men's soccer team in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship match.
The first 15 minutes of the game were a back-and-forth affair as both teams were battling in the midfield.
Hofstra broke through for the game's first goal in the 20th minute as Teddy Baker pushed one into the back of the net.
The Pride carried that 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Hawks applied pressure to start the second half as Monmouth forced Wessel Speel to make a pair of early saves.
The two teams continued to battle until the 83rd minute as Hofstra was called for a foul in the box. Zakowski stepped up and rocketed the penalty kick home for the Hawks and tied the game.
The two teams finished regulation tied at 1-1 and headed to overtime.
Hofstra broke through in the first overtime session as Eliot Goldthrop took a free kick and was able to lift it over the wall and into the net for a 2-1 lead.
Monmouth got off all six shots in the second overtime session, including one from
Eryk Dymora but was unable to connect and Hofstra claimed the 2-1 win and the championship.
