Hofstra advances in penalty kicks, 5-4
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Penalty kicks were needed to determine a winner in the Monmouth University women's soccer team's quarterfinal round matchup with Hofstra on Thursday afternoon at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
In the end of a thrilling back-and-forth affair, it was the No. 8 seed Hofstra to advance by a 5-4 margin in seven rounds of penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of action.
Hofstra jumped out to an early lead when Anja Suttner scored 10 minutes into the match. The Pride held the lead until
Summer Reimet took a touch past her defender and found the far side netting in the 62
nd minute. Suttner had an opportunity to put Hofstra ahead again less than 10 minutes after Reimet's equalizer, but
Cassie Coster saved a penalty kick and the ensuing rebound to keep the match tied.
Neither side was able to find the winner in regulation or through two overtime periods, before Hofstra outlasted Monmouth, 5-4 in seven rounds of penalties. Krista Agostinello scored the decisive penalty for the Pride.
MATCH NOTES AND QUOTES
"Although the result didn't swing our way, I couldn't be prouder of how our team battled and fought until the final whistle. This year, being first as a head coach, was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. The work these young women have put in day after day in order to make our mark in the CAA is nothing short of incredible. I feel very fortunate having been able to lead such strong willed and competitive players.
I would be remiss to not acknowledge our 5th years as well as our senior class as they have always been our anchors. They have given everything and more with hopes of leaving their legacy behind and I strongly believe they have done just that. Our program will not be the same without them but I promise to work harder to continue be a program that they are proud of. Thank you for your continued confidence and love, I will never be able to repay you all.
I also want to say thank you to our coaching staff for all their hard work this season. I am very excited for the future of this program and can't wait to continue to build off of this amazing start together. Their dedication to this program and to our student-athletes is irreplaceable."
