PHILADELPHIA – The Monmouth University women's rowing team hit the water for the first time in program history as it competed in the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
In its first race ever, the Collegiate Women's Freshman 8+, Monmouth placed third out of five boats, finishing behind LaSalle and Navy, and ahead of Old Dominion and Marist.
In the afternoon, the Hawks lined up for their second race of the day, the Collegiate Women's Freshman 4+. Monmouth's two entries finished fourth and sixth in the eight-boat event.
RACE NOTES AND QUOTES
"The sport of rowing is unique in that it allows for freshmen to race freshmen in their first fall of collegiate competition. As a first-year program, this gave us an opportunity to see how our recruiting class stacked up against a field of excellent teams."
"This was a historic day for the program. The athletes who committed to being the founders of this team went out and represented Monmouth University with pride. It would be easy to assume that there was no pressure on us today, but I would argue the opposite. They carried the weight of founding a program on their shoulders and they did so in a manner that I believe exceeded all of our expectations. I can't wait to see where they go from here."
