JERSEY CITY, NJ – Trey Dombroski (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) struck out 10 in a complete-game shutout, and
Jalen Jenkins (Waxhaw, NC/Cuthbertson/Brunswick CC) and
Matt Graber (Newton, MA/Dexter) homered as Monmouth University Baseball (17-9, 17-9 MAAC) shut out Saint Peter's in the back end of a Saturday doubleheader, 5-0. The Peacocks took the opener in extra innings by a 1-0 count.
Monmouth scored in the first three innings of Game Two to stake Dombroski to the lead, with Jenkins hitting his first home run as a Hawk, a solo shot in the first to make it 1-0. Graber led off the second with his first homer of the year, and Jenkins drove in another later in the inning after
Brady Mutz (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) doubled to give MU a 3-0 lead. Dombroski retired the first eight he faced, and got more run support in the third. Mutz lifted a sac fly to plate a run, and
Jake Catalano (Southampton, NJ/St. Augustine Prep/RCGC) drove an RBI single to center to make it 5-0, all the runs the MU starter would need. Dombroski ultimately fanned 10 with no walks to secure the win.
A pitcher's duel in the opener saw
Dan Klepchick (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) strike out 10 in seven innings, scattering seven hits and no walks as he and SPU's Jordan Warecke traded zeroes throughout the seven-inning contest. In the eighth, the Peacocks got the leadoff man aboard with an infield hit and after a passed ball and a walk, and Andrew Connor's double brought home the game's only run, giving the home team the win.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"Tough first game. Klepchick threw well but we were unable to muster any offense. We bounced back nicely in the second game. We scored early which was very important for us. Trey had a great outing. Looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow." – Head Coach
