WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University Baseball (11-1, 11-1 MAAC) continued its dominant play, sweeping another doubleheader from Siena College (3-9, 3-9 MAAC) to win its 11
th consecutive game, the fourth longest winning streak in the school's Division I history. MU took the first game 2-0 before a 13-1 offensive explosion to conclude the series.
Monmouth posted its fourth consecutive shutout in the Game One win, with
Rob Hensey (Campbell Hall, NY/Goshen) keeping his ERA perfect on the year with six shutout, four-hit innings and four K's. The Hawks gave Hensey all the run support he needed in the second, when
Alex Barker (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) connected on his second homer down the right field line in as many days leading off.
Dixon Black (Archbald, PA/Valley View) followed with a base hit and a stolen base before
Jake Catalano (Southampton, NJ/St. Augustine Prep/RCGC) came through with a clutch two-out line drive single to make it 2-0. Hensey only allowed one Saint to reach second base and ended his afternoon with a quick sixth that included a double play.
Regan Dombroski (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) came on and picked up his second save with a pair of strikeouts.
Danny Long (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) threw five strong innings in the nightcap and the offense backed him in a big way, scoring in the first five innings. Sac flies in the first and second got the Hawks on the board before the biggest offensive frame of the season came in the third. MU sent 14 to the plate and collected eight runs on eight hits, and got RBI contributions from
Johnny Zega (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and
James Harmstead (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) twice in the inning. Black, Catalano and Barker also drove in runs with hits, including a Catalano double inside the third-base bag. Siena got a run in the fourth to snap Monmouth's scoreless innings streak at 34, a run the Blue and White got right back via an error.
Mason Miller (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) and
Michael Dimino (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) both delivered scoreless relief innings as the game ended in seven innings due to the 10+ run margin.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"Another good day for our guys. We continue to get great pitching and play team baseball. In Game One, Hensey pitched on short rest; didn't have his best stuff today but battled and dug in when he needed. Barker jump started us with his homer and we were able to scratch another one across with Catalano's two-out RBI. He had some clutch hits for us this weekend. Another play that doesn't show up in the box score is a play
Johnny Zega made that held Siena to a single, if that ball gets by him that inning unfolds a little different." – Head Coach
Dean Ehehalt on the first game and the day overall
"In Game Two, Danny competed well and pounded the zone. We were able to manufacture single runs in the first and second inning which allowed us to relax some and then we were able to break it open with the big inning. It was nice to see us have that big inning; a few guys with some key two-strike hits as well as some very good situational at bats. I am super proud of how we have battled and played this past week. Solid team effort again today." – Ehehalt on the second game
