WEST WINDSOR, NJ – The No. 1 seed Monmouth University men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship on Sunday, grinding out a 4-2 win over No. 2 Fairfield.
The Hawks won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 (
Victor Castro and
Lucca Silva) and No. 3 (
Will Cooke Wharton and
Charles Gortzounian).
Sophomore
Gabriel Busato earned a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Castro won a tight match at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 7-5.
Senior
Sergio Martinez earned the clinching point for the Hawks with a comeback 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Monmouth improves to 14-2 on the season, and has won 12 straight matches. The Hawks will await their next opponent for the NCAA Tournament.
