NEW HAVEN, CT – Behind three in double figures and a +16 rebounding differential, Monmouth University Men's Basketball (9-2) won its NCAA-best seventh true road game of the season Tuesday, topping Yale University (6-7) 69-60 in a game the Hawks never trailed. The win is Monmouth's seventh non-league win, tied for the third most in a season in school history.
Monmouth's lead grew to 20 in the second half, but a strong Yale push got them within single digits at the 9:19 mark. The Bulldogs then cut it to three at 5:31, but MU continued to hold off Yale from the foul line. With 1:45 remaining,
Walker Miller netted a critical putback to push the margin back to eight as MU went 14-14 from the stripe in the final 5:16 to secure the win.
The Hawks jumped out to a 16-6 lead before Yale trimmed that back down to four. The advantage grew back to 10 ahead of a Shavar Reynolds triple to make it 13, and after Yale scored,
George Papas netted a three of his own to make it a 14-point game with the Hawks eventually hitting the locker room with a 16-point advantage.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"I'm so proud of this group. Anything we get hit with, they keep finding ways to get it done. Extremely happy to be 9-2 with a schedule that nobody picked us to be 9-2 in. This group keeps finding ways." – Head Coach
King Rice
"I'm very proud of our team. We've been enduring adversity and just finding ways to win. Free throw shooting is such a key, it's one of the things that defines winning. Boxing out, free throws and limiting turnovers are what good teams do." – Shavar Reynolds
"I think this one speaks to the resilience of this team and how together we are. The more together we are as a team, the better we can be. I think our togetherness pops out in the fact that we keep winning these types of games." –
