Â
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ -Â Monmouth University, in conjunction with the unanimous decisions made by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents on Monday, has made the difficult but necessary step to cancel all fall athletics contests.
Â
While we understand the tremendous disappointment by our student-athletes, their parents and our fans, it is the University's top responsibility to provide a safe learning experience for all of our students.
Â
"It is my top priority, as the President of Monmouth University, to do everything possible to ensure the safety and well-being of our student body, especially during this global public health crisis," said Monmouth President Dr. Patrick F. Leahy. "The decision to cancel fall sports was not made easily, and it was discussed many times over the last few weeks and months. My heart breaks for our student-athletes, their coaches, and their families. We will do everything possible to replace these lost competitive opportunities in the spring, if possible."Â
Â
Earlier this month the America East Conference (Monmouth field hockey's conference affiliation) made the decision to suspend the fall season. Monmouth's football team, which competes in the Big South Conference, will also forgo the fall season.
Â
This decision affects the sports of football, men's and women's soccer, field hockey and men's and women's cross country. Men's and women's golf and tennis will not play their non-traditional fall seasons either. Student-athletes from these sports will be permitted to train upon returning to campus as health protocols allow.
Â
"While I am extremely saddened by this decision, it was the right one," said Monmouth Vice President and Director of Athletics
Dr. Marilyn McNeil. "The health and welfare of our student-athletes, their families, our coaches and our fans has to guide all decisions made in regards to competing in intercollegiate athletics. I am committed to continuing the conversation about giving our athletes the opportunity to compete as soon as it is safe to do so."
Â
Monmouth and the MAAC remain open to exploring options for play in the spring semester. Until then our student-athletes will join the rest of the student population on campus for the fall semester.
