Game Recap: Field Hockey |

LATE DEFENSIVE STAND, VAN LANGE’S HAT TRICK LEADS FH OVER PENN

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Clinging to a one-goal lead, the Monmouth University field hockey team withstood four attacking corners, blocking away three shots in the final 3:11, while sophomore Annick van Lange (Sint-Job, Belgium / Annuntia Institute) capped off a hat trick with an empty-cage goal with 13 seconds left to propel the Hawks (4-1) to a 4-2 win over Penn, Friday afternoon.

Trailing by one, the Quakers pulled their goalkeeper for the extra attacker.  The visitors created four attacking corner chances with Gracyn Banks getting off three shots, but all three attempts were blocked away by Hannah Schiavo (Glen Gardner, NJ / Voorhees) and the defensive unit.  The Hawks were able to flip the field following the defensive stand and freshman Yasmin Pratt (Wicklow, Ireland / Kilkenny College HS) set up van Lange for the insurance marker to seal the victory.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Penn struck for two goals 43 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead.  The Hawks cut the deficit in half before the break as Pratt settled the ball in the circle, spun and sent a shot to the short side for her fifth of the year.  The Hawks evened things up on a corner in the 39th minute when Schiavo inserted to the top the circle to junior classmate Meg de Lange (Johannesburg, South Africa / St. Mary's Waverley) who stick-stopped and set up van Lange's first of the afternoon.  A loose ball off a scrum found van Lange's stick in the 52nd  minute to give the Hawks their first lead of the afternoon.

Kate O'Hogan recorded three saves in the victory for her fourth win of the season.
