MEN’S SOCCER EDGED BY #23 WEST VIRGINIA, 1-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ -  A 51st-minute goal that dinged off the inside of the left post gave #23 West Virginia the win over the Monmouth University men's soccer team on Friday afternoon, 1-0. The Hawks created several chances, including shots on goal from freshman Julian Gomez, junior Chris Scheuerman, and sophomore Robin Oswald, but could not find the back of the net. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sean Murray made seven saves in the loss. Monmouth drops to 0-1 on the season, and will look to bounce back when it hosts Penn next Friday night.

-Gomez had an early chance in the 10th minute but it ended up just wide from 25 yards out.
-In the 51st minute, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead. WVU's Ethan Shim hit one off the inside of the left post.
-Scheuerman got behind the defense in 59th minute, but the WVU's Steven Tekesky made a diving save on the doorstep.
-In the 68th minute, redshirt junior John Antunes played a through ball inside the box to freshman Anthony Arena, but the West Virginia goalkeeper came diving in to break it up.
-Oswald slid a shot to the right corner in the 77th minute, but Tekesky got a hand on it to keep it 1-0.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Freshmen Julian Gomez, Ben Zakowski, Anthony Arena, and Griffin Tomas all made their first career appearances.
-Newcomers Sebastian Rodriguez, Pablo Fonseca, Oswald, and Ryan Nigro also made their first appearances with the Hawks.
-WVU held the slight 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
-Murray has 94 saves in 18 career games played.
-West Virginia takes a 2-1-1 all-time series lead.
