NEW ROCHELLE, NY –
Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) had three hits and the Monmouth bullpen allowed just one run as Monmouth University Baseball (24-26-1, 11-10) completed a three-game sweep of Iona College (12-37, 6-15) Monday, winning 9-4.
Max Goione (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven/Siena) scampered home on a wild pitch in the third as the Hawks scored without a hit to go up 1-0.
Dan Klepchick (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) retired the first nine batters he faced, and MU extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth. A bases loaded walk plated the first before
Colin McCreary (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) snuck a two-run single back up the middle to give the Hawks a cushion.
Iona got those three runs right back in the fourth, with Sam Punzi and Stephen Furman driving in runs with singles.
Danny Long's (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) sacrifice fly got one back for MU in the fifth, and after
Regan Dombroski (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) worked 2.2 shutout innings and
Ryan Steckline (Newark, DE/Appoquinimink) got the final out of the seventh, the Hawks pounced for a four-run eighth. Two straight bases loaded walks scored a pair, and Schild's fielder's choice scored two more after Iona threw it away. Steckline induced a double play to end the game and secure the victory.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"A solid team win today. The guys played with some grit and our pitchers were able to hold serve until we padded the lead. Offensively, we were opportunistic and showed some very good plate discipline. We hit some balls very hard and didn't have much to show for it, but put together a few good at bats when needed. Klepchick, Regan and Steckline battled in less than ideal conditions and the defense played solid. We need to keep getting better and get ready to play at the end of the week." – Head Coach
Dean Ehehalt
