WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – After clinching its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament automatic bid by winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title, the Monmouth University men's tennis team drew Penn State during the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday evening. The match will be played on Friday, May 3 at the historic USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
"We've had a great regular season, so it was nice to put everything together for the conference championship," said Monmouth Head Coach
Chris Leicht. "That was one of our major team goals. We're very lucky to have three amazing seniors. One of our goals was to not only make it to NCAAs, but to have a chance to advance. Especially with this veteran group, we feel like that's a real possibility."
The Hawks come into the matchup on a 16-game winning streak, including a 4-0 sweep over Fairfield in the MAAC semifinals and a 4-0 sweep of Quinnipiac in the MAAC Championship. Monmouth finished the 2019 regular season campaign with a perfect 6-0 MAAC record, and an 18-1 record overall.
All six starters from the squad were named to an All-MAAC First Team. In addition, senior
Srdjan Jakovljevic was named MAAC Player of the Year. Senior
Nicola Pipoli, junior
Max Benaim, sophomore
Will Cooke Wharton, junior
Sergio Martinez, and senior
Alberto Giuffrida round out the starting six.
Leicht was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in his first season with the team.
