WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – A late home run in game one and an offensive barrage in game two led Kent State to a doubleheader sweep over the Monmouth University softball team on Tuesday. Junior Sam Tomasetti hit an RBI double to give Monmouth the 1-0 lead in the first game, but the Golden Flashes hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Alyssa Irons tossed a complete game with six strikeouts, but fell to 11-6 on the season. In game two, freshman Lindsey Baron shined with a two-run home run and multiple defensive plays, including a diving catch and throwing out a runner at home from center field. Monmouth falls to 13-10 on the season, and will begin conference play this weekend when the team hosts Canisius and Niagara.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"From top to bottom, we competed hard in game one. Alyssa threw a good game and got out of multiple jams. We battled to get the lead, but just couldn't close it out in a tough seventh inning. I was proud that we continued to fight despite some things not going our way. In game two, the wind was just out of our sails a little bit. Throughout the day, we never quit and kept battling. Kent State is a great team and this was a big challenge ahead of conference play."- Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-In game one, Monmouth got on the board first in the bottom of the third. After Baron singled down the left field line, she scored from first base on Tomasetti's RBI double to left center.
-Irons got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first with two straight strikeouts. She later escaped another bases loaded, one-out jam in the top of the sixth with a strikeout and a groundout.
-With two outs in the top of the seventh, Kent State's Jen Cader launched a three-run shot to right field.

-In game two, Kent State started off strong with four runs in the top of the first. Cader hit a two-RBI double in the inning.
-Monmouth answered with a run in the bottom of the first, as junior Amber Wozniak hit an RBI single up the middle to score Tomasetti, who previously reached on a fielder's choice.
-The Golden Flashes piled on five runs in the top of the second to go ahead 9-1.
-Baron launched a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 9-3. Junior Deangie Jimenez scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single.
