FOURTH QUARTER RUN PROPELS CANISIUS PAST THE HAWKS

BUFFALO, NY – Using a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter, Canisius defeated the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Sunday, 65-56. The Hawks scored the first five points of the final frame to get within two, but the big Golden Griffins run put the game out of reach. Junior Sierra Green led the team with 15 points, including four triples. Freshman Lucy Thomas added 12 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line to go along with two three-pointers. Canisius shot 24-51 (47%) from the floor, and held Monmouth to just 17-60 (28%). From three-point range, the Golden Griffins went 8-15 (53%) while holding Monmouth to 7-32 (22%). With just two regular season games left, the Hawks will host Marist on Thursday.

-After Monmouth scored the first bucket, Canisius went on a 10-0 run. Later, a Green triple cut the Hawks' deficit to 12-7 at the first quarter media timeout.
-Monmouth ended the quarter on a 10-0 run, taking a 17-16 lead after one.
-Canisius opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, but Monmouth answered with four straight points from junior Rosa Graham. At the media timeout, the Golden Griffins held on to the slight 23-21 advantage.
-By halftime, the Hawks trailed 32-29. Monmouth shot 29% from the floor and 18% from three, but went 10-12 from the free throw line.
-Thomas' second triple of the game brought the Hawks to within two in the third quarter at 41-39.
-Canisius ended the frame on a 7-2 run, including a late three from Sara Hinriksdottir, to go ahead 48-41 heading into the fourth.
-The Hawks scored the first five points of the fourth, including a Green triple. The deficit was 48-46 with 8:46 left.
-Immediately after, Canisius used a 10-0 run to go up 58-46. Only 4:11 remained after the turning point.
-Green hit another three late to get within eight, but Canisius hit free throws late to seal the win.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Thomas went into double-figures for the 13th time this season.
-With four more three-pointers today, Green now has 90 on the season. She trails only Kayla Shaw (93) for the program record with two regular season games remaining.
-Junior Alexa Middleton added seven points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
-Senior Erica Balman blocked three shots, and now has 122 in her career which ranks 5th in program history.
-Monmouth turned the ball over a season-low 10 times.
-The Hawks went 15-20 from the line in the game.
 
UP NEXT
The Hawks will return to West Long Branch to face Marist for the home finale and Senior Night on Thursday. The Red Foxes hold a 23-20 all-time series lead, including a 69-45 win in New York earlier this season.
