WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University Men's Basketball (10-18, 9-6) got
Diago Quinn's (New York, NY/Lake Forest Academy) second consecutive double-double, but Marist College (12-14, 7-7) used a 51% shooting percentage to top MU Sunday afternoon, 75-67.
The Red Foxes built their lead as large as 17 in the second half, using an 11-2 run to make it 60-43 with 14:14 to play. MU responded to get right back in it with a 14-2 run, including three long balls from
George Papas (Jersey City, NJ/Union Catholic) and a
Mustapha Traore (Philadelphia, PA/Phelps School) breakaway dunk to trim it to 67-64 with 5:38 to go. Marist answered that with an 8-0 run, sealing the road victory.
Marist started the game hot from the floor, making their first six shots and at one point shooting over 70% from both the field and three. The Red Foxes lead grew as large as 12 on Brian Parker's layup at 9:15, but MU battled back, getting it within four on a pair of Quinn foul shots at 3:32. MU was within three after the Hawks snagged a steal and Hammond scored on the fast break, but Isaiah Lamb scored late to give Marist a five-point lead into the intermission.
