MEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT MANHATTAN IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

RIVERDALE, NY – With 37 seconds left in double overtime, Manhattan gathered a loose ball and placed a shot to the lower right corner to defeat the Monmouth University men's soccer team, 1-0.
 
The Hawks had a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal prior to the game-winner. Redshirt junior John Antunes (Fairfield, NJ/St. Benedict's) had three shots on goal, while junior Sebastian Rodriguez (Cartago, Costa Rica/Mont Berkeley) added two.
 
Monmouth did not allow a shot on goal until the first overtime period, and the attempt was saved by redshirt sophomore Sean Murray (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood). The Hawks will host Niagara for Senior Day on Saturday.

-The first shot of the game for either side was taken by Antunes in the 20th minute, which was saved by the Manhattan keeper.
-With time ticking down in the first half, freshman Anthony Arena headed a ball wide.
-Antunes had another opportunity in the 49th minute, but his blast was saved. Freshman Griffin Tomas handled the rebound, but his shot was blocked.
-The Hawks had three straight opportunities beginning in the 60th minute. Junior Sebastian Rodriguez had two headers that were saved, and Antunes had another strike that was stopped.
-The Jaspers registered their first shot on goal during the 96th minute, and it was saved by Murray.
-With less than a minute left in the second overtime, Manhattan's Thomas Hitchins gathered a rebound and sent it to the bottom right corner.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-The Hawks had a 12-9 edge in total shots.
-Monmouth held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.
-Rodriguez leads the team with 13 shots this season. Antunes is second with 11.
-Junior Anes Mrkulic earned his first start of the season.
-Each team received four yellow cards.
 
UP NEXT
Monmouth will have its first conference home game against Niagara on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM, and the Hawks will honor five seniors before the game.
