Dylan Capwell '18 is set to sign a 3-year contract with the Atlanta Track Club Elite based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The six-time NCAA All-American will begin training with the club this fall to prepare for the 2019 season. His contract runs through the 2020 Olympic Trials where Capwell will attempt to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Â
"I'm unable to put into words that Dylan's efforts and achievements have meant to me, our coaching staff, and his teammates," said Assistant Coach and Middle Distance Coach
Chris Tarello. "He is an athlete that doesn't come around too often, and while we will miss him dearly we couldn't be happier for Dylan and the opportunity that he has in front of him to compete as a professional for the Atlanta Track Club."
Â
Capwell joins a club with a rich history as the Atlanta Track Club was established in 1964 and is currently the second largest running organization in the United States. He will be coached by Executive Director and former World Championships medalist Rich Kenah, two-time NCAA National Champion Amy Begley, and three-time All-American Andrew Begley. He will train and be teammates with former Iowa State Cyclone Edward Kemboi, who beat Capwell in the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships where Capwell finished as the runner-up to Kemboi.
Â
"Dylan has already shown himself to be a world-class athlete during his time at Monmouth University," said Kenah. "We are excited he has chosen to continue his athletic journey with Atlanta Track Club. We are very different than other post-collegiate training groups as we provide training and racing solutions for beginners and elites and everyone in between. As Dylan trains, competes and volunteers here in Running City USA, he will inspire our 30,000 members and give the youth in our community something to which they can aspire."
Â
Capwell becomes the first Monmouth track and field athlete to sign a professional contract since 2015. Ford Palmer '13, who was also coached by current middle distance coach
Chris Tarello, is currently under contract with Hoka One One. As a member of the New Jersey New York Track Club, Palmer has run 14 sub-4:00 miles and has a best of 3:54. He competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the men's 1500 meters and finished 5
th at the 2014 U.S. Championships.Â
Â
"We were very proud to have Dylan represent Monmouth at the NCAA Championships six times, and on top of that he was always wanted to do whatever he could for the team," said head coach
Joe Compagni. "At MAACs, at IC4As and throughout the year, he competed very tough and wanted to see those around him reach new levels as well. The environment at the Atlanta T.C. will be great for him, where he has great teammates and coaches to work with and a strong network of support to allow him to excel as a professional."
