WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT CANISIUS, 62-50

BUFFALO, NY  – Holding the Hawks to just 3-22 from beyond the arc, Canisius defeated the Monmouth University women's basketball team in Buffalo tonight, 62-50. The Golden Griffins shot 48% from the floor and received 23 points from both Sara Hinriksdottir and Margaret Halfdanardottir, who combined for 20-of-34 shooting. Eleven different Monmouth players scored in the contest, but none had more than seven points. Sophomore Alexa Middleton led the team with seven points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Adriana Zelaya added seven points and five rebounds in just nine minutes. The Hawks dropped to 8-18 (6-9 MAAC) on the season, and will have a quick turnaround to face Niagara on Sunday.

-Canisius shot 7-of-9 in the first quarter to jump out to an 18-13 lead. The Hawks were just 1-of-6 from beyond the arc in the frame.
-The Hawks trailed by just four after a Shaw jumper with 5:54 left in the second quarter, but the Golden Griffs outscored Monmouth 9-4 to close the frame. At halftime, Canisius led 31-22.
-The Golden Griffs scored the first nine points of the third quarter, running out to a 40-22 lead.
-Canisius kept the foot on the gas in the third quarter, and took a 51-36 lead heading into the final quarter.
-Monmouth scored the first four points of the fourth to cut the deficit to 11, but the Golden Griffins hung on to take the 62-50 win. The Hawks outscored Canisius 14-11 in the final quarter.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-The Hawks are now 1-16 (1-9 MAAC) when they score less than 60 points.
-Monmouth outrebounded the Golden Griffs 36-31.
-Canisius built its largest lead of 20 points in the third quarter.
-The Hawks went 7-of-8 from the free throw line, including Middleton's perfect 3-of-3.
-Sophomore Alaina Jarnot added four points, five assists, and three rebounds in the loss.
-With another triple tonight, Shaw moved into sole possession for 6th all-time with 144 for her career.
-Junior Erica Balman had another block tonight, and now has a MAAC-leading 47 on the season.
 
UP NEXT
On Sunday, Monmouth will take on Niagara at 2:00 PM. The Hawks earned the thrilling 65-63 victory over the Purple Eagles last Saturday, thanks to Kayla Shaw's go-ahead three with 17.8 seconds remaining.
